idea number 76

Topic: National Debt

The current national debt is about 14 trillion, 435 billion, and well after that it changes so fast its not important. What is important is the the 14,435,000,000,000. Thats a lot of money that the citizens of america are stuck with, and every day i look at it, in the form of a rising unemployment rate, empty store fronts, and angry grimaces on the faces of people every where.

Solution: In recent news there have been issues about the drug war, and its not so successful highlights. I propose a form of tax stamp to solve both of these issues. If the Federal government were to allow a publicly operated and federally controlled environment for marijuana to be traded in, each participator would be able to purchase a "grow your own" stamp, thus promoting an even safer environment for drugs to take place in. Back on to the topic of debt, these stamps could be available at $500/ year. According to www.census.com, the current US population as of 2010, is 308,745,800 people. Utilizing these people to help in the debt clean up would be extremely efficient, and easily imposed. I understand that some people can't afford $500 for a silly stamp that lets you grow a reasonably amount of personal marijuana. To solve this problem, a Federal program could be instated to allow a debt linked to the Federal Income Tax, so those not able to immediately afford the tax stamp would still be able to purchase it, paying directly through the following years Income Tax. This revenue, coming from 308 million plus people would generate 1.5 trillion dollars per year (numbers rounded down to keep the math simple). In 10 years the Federal government would be on the breaking point of a surplus, with no current changes to any of the programs current politicians consider "untouchable" (i.e. medicare, unemployment, food stamps). After the 10th year, if we can stop paying for wars, and maintain a surplus, we can reduce the yearly tax stamp rate to something more reasonable.

This was something completely generated from my own curiosity, feel free to let me know what my peers think.
